Never once was I disconnected, or even experienced significantly diminished speeds compared to when I was standing still. What makes the Orbi different from other Wi-Fi systems is that the add-on wireless extender connects to the main router using a dedicated Wi-Fi band. The second unit is the Orbi add-on satellite. This unit works as the wireless extender of the Orbi router and can also host up to four wired devices via its four LAN ports.

The newer your main router is, the faster the extender that it will take, so use your router’s age as a rough guide. Traditional extenders give you a new wireless network, then connect wirelessly to your router. They’re easy to set up, but you’ll have two networks to manage. A mesh extender works with your existing network, using the same name. They’re more expensive, but a more elegant solution.

However, the fastest mesh systems have a dedicated backhaul WiFi band between mesh units for fast, reliable connections to all devices. First you connect the main Orbi router to an internet source like a broadband modem and turn it on. After that, place the add-on satellite unit at a distance from the main router, then turn it on and you're done. The two are preconfigured to work together, and the satellite will automatically replicate the Wi-Fi settings of the main router.

The system can also prevent children from accessing the network when they should be asleep or doing homework. The protection can easily be managed using Netgear’s Orbi smartphone or via the web interface built into the Orbi router. The Orbi 860 Series can easily be extended with extra satellite units.

In our tests, we boosted speeds in the bathroom from 42.6Mbps to 85.2Mbps. That’s the slowest speed from an extender but shows that this kit can get wireless where you need it. And, third, you don’t get much in the way of extras beyond simply extending your Wi-Fi range. Still, if you want a simple upgrade for your home network, giving you a mesh-like experience without replacing your router, this is a great buy. A 10/100Mbps Ethernet port on the side can be used to connect up wired devices. You can also run an Ethernet cable to your router and run the extender as a more traditional wireless access point.

Nevertheless, despite being expensive, this i a great add-on to a Wi-Fi 6 router or, used in access point mode, a great Wi-Fi 6 upgrade for an old router. If you just need to boost wireless performance and speed to one or two rooms, the TP-Link RE365 Wi-Fi Range Extender offers excellent value. Simply plug it in; it can be run in extender mode, creating a new wireless network for you to join, while connecting wirelessly to your router.

You get a guest network, but that’s the limit of additional features. While you can buy faster mesh systems, if you want a cheap mesh upgrade and want to keep your existing router, then this is a great set. Just plug the first disc in via Ethernet, then spread the two other discs around your home to get a new, faster wireless network.
